Cervicitis is inflammation of the cervix, and a cervical discharge directly reflects inflammation in that area. A purulent or mucopurulent discharge seen at the cervix is a classic sign of cervicitis, often due to infections like chlamydia or gonorrhea. Painful urination or itching can occur with other conditions (urethritis, vulvovaginitis, dermatitis) and are less specific for cervicitis. No discharge would argue against cervicitis. So cervical discharge is the best indicator.
